St. Valentine's Day Plans

With less than a week 'til V-day, I've already been asked many times what The Boyfriend and I will be doing to celebrate. This was also mentioned by the man himself, who went “OH CRAP, it's Valentine's Day soon... What shall we do?!” Whilst it's fun to make him sweat a little, I really don't want to do anything on the 14th!

Frugal Dad recently wrote a post about the money spent on Valentine's day in the US, which was an astonishing $15.7 billion annually! He did also point out that giving gifts to those you love isn't necessarily a bad thing, and can even have health benefits! I just don't like the idea of people frantically running round the shops to buy more Stuff.

There have been a few craft-based Valentine's posts recently too, including Heavenly Handmades' gorgeous muslin heart wreath and Debt Free By Thirty's valentine faux bois. (DEFINITELY didn't have to Google the phrase “faux bois” either... “Faux Bois (from the French for false wood) refers to the artistic imitation of wood or wood grains in various media”...).

Whilst these are very pretty, I don't really want to decorate for Valentine's day. I don't want to go out for dinner either, because it's a) expensive and b) too crowded! Hopefully we'll just dig out a seldom-watched DVD and a bottle of wine left over from Christmas.

What are your plans, if any? Are you staying frugal or pulling out all the stops?

I've been single for the last 12 years but never really had anything VDay in the past.I think we should always be romantic all year round so dont really do with card holidays.

You are right, another Hallmark holiday only rivaled by Mothers Day which has completely got out of hand here in the States, like a mini-Xmas. Presents, dinners out etc. Totally ridiculous. My sons all call me on Mothers Day and we have a nice 10 - 15 minute chat - I really dont want any more than that.

Ya know, when I'm single I don't mind Valentine's Day at all, because I feel absolutely no pressure, and chocolate and flowers are dirt cheap on February 15th! But when I'm in a relationship, it stresses me out. The last thing I want to do is join the stampede of couple to restaurants that are overstuffed with celebrants, so deal with no-so great service and sub-par food (when it's better the othe 364 days of the year).

Really--if a guy I was dating wanted to do something nice for me on Valentine's Day, cooking me a nice meal is his best bet. And back scratches. Many, many back scratches.

Mr Sft will cook me my favourite dinner and we will cuddle up in front of the fire with a glass of wine.

Wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

We try to make a big deal every year out of our anniversary but Valentines day doesn't seem like much of an event for either of us.

I like to get him little gifts here and there sporadically all the time. We don't really need a set aside day when everyone else is being romantic as well. I guess when it comes down to it we pretty much ignore Valentines day.

We really don't do much for V-Day between the hubby and me. Yes I enjoy making crafts for the kids but that's about it!

My single friends and I refer to 2/14 as SAD - Singles Awareness Day. I'm spending it tucked in at home because of a really bad cold. Kind of grateful not to be surrounded by all the flowers and hoopla at work! Just got up for some soup and blog reading.

Question for you -- I am in the states and am curious about the English school system. Could you explain how the schools work over there. We have elementary (k-4), middle (5 -8), and high school (9-12), then college and further degrees after that -- curious about how it works in Britain.

Thanks

Jean - MN

We did nothing and no gifts (except, of course, my little post in the blog).

But, we did have a lot of kisses and hugs :)
