The Great Heating Debate

How cold is too cold? There are so many posts at this time of year about either succumbing to the cold or sitting freezing your bum off! Which side of the fence do you fall on?

It's cold here. I live in Cornwall, so it's colder pretty much everywhere else in the UK, but hey, it's cold here too! We haven't had the heating on yet. It's getting impossible to dry clothes and I'm worried that the house is going to start going mouldy again! My dad and I are really trying hard to keep the electricity bill down this year and everyone's on board with it, but it was difficult to get to sleep last night as my face was freezing (I pulled the duvet over my head but I have to leave an air hole to breathe through)! I went to The Boyfriend's house yesterday and it was so toasty and warm inside! Jealous!

What do we think? Is it worth putting the heating on for an hour in the evening?

We have our heat on. I'm not sure how cold it is there, but it's around 30 degrees here and we have our heat set at 73. I hate the cold.

I'm at home during the day but don't put any heating on then as I'm usually busy and so I don't feel it. There have been some evenings when we have put the heating on for a couple of hours, other evenings we have been ok just with a blanket over us while we watch tv.Even though I am about £150 in credit with my gas I'm only going to use the heating when necessary. I don't think it's really cold yet - I'm in the North West, and there's bound to be plenty of cold weather to come.

My heating is on when my daughter is about, bit off during day and when shes at work. We suffer badly from condensation and mould so not really sure what a happy balance is.I have to have a dehumidifier in daughters room and the conservatory as the windows run.
nto

I put the heating on for an hour in the evening if it is frosty freezing outside, more for the cats than me. I think too much heat is bad for your health. I never get colds as the germs wouldn't survive around here.

The heat is worth the bill to me.

It's been around -3 at night for a bit now. During the day it's been around 4 degrees. And honestly it hasn't really gotten cold yet. We keep the house at 20 degrees. Anything less than that and the dogs start shivering. I'm not gonna sit around in the cold and watch my furry babies shivering. We'll pay the bill and that's that!

I'll turn it up a bit to warm up my place, but then I turn it off. It helps that I'm on the second floor, so the heat from downstairs rises, and that my place is very sunny in the winter with all the leaves gone. It also helps if I'm baking--then I start sweating and really don't need the heat on!

We live in Dover and have only just started putting the heating on for a total of about an hour a day. I tend to put it on for 15 mins first thing in the morning to take the chill off, then I'll put it on for short bursts during the day if it gets a bit chilly and the same in the evening. Clothes-drying is a pain. I still hang stuff out on the line when I can because it removes some of the wetness but things don't get really dry outside at the moment so I try and put stuff mostly over the radiator in the hall when I have the heating on on. With 7 adults in the house washing is a real problem in winter as I won't have a tumble drier due to the cost.

An hour a day certainly seems to be the consensus! That's what we were thinking too. Clothes drying is a real issue though!!

Clothes drying is indeed a pain at the moment. Last week I hung washing outside on two sunny days, but I think it was actually wetter when it came back it, although it smelled lovely!

I keep it about 60* F at most...visitors think the heat is broken...as long as I don't see my breath I'm fine! Cats have many cozy spots to sleep on...

I rent an apartment and have no control over the heat, but it is always too hot. I keep a window open even on the coldest days. This is not a problem that most people have.
